A great part of the mystery about the ginseng is surely due to the relatively anthropomorphic shape of its root. Indeed, just like the mandrake, the ginseng can give the impression to have two arms and two legs... and its name means "man-root".
Originating in Mandchouria, Korea and Siberia, this wild root was sought by the Chinese, since millenia, and had a completely fantastic mythology.
It is only at the beginning of 18th century that it was introduced in Occident, to have a momentary glory there, before falling into the lapse of memory.
We had to wait the Sixties so that it came back into fashion and it became a stimulant and an aphrodisiac especially appreciated by the sirs.
But, traditionally, the ginseng is not limited to these restricted indications. One regards it of course as a general stimulant, nervous, cardiac, pulmonary, sexual, one of the best tonic plants often indicated in the cases of asthenia or depression or in the event of convalescence, of senescence, of physical or intellectual tiredness, but also as a depurative, an aperitif, an analgesics (in particular in the rheumatic pains), stomachic and febrifuge.
It also has vasomotric properties and activates the exchanges (glyco genesis, diuresis with urea elimination).
Thus, i twill be used not only when one feels tired, but also when there’s no appetite, when one undergoes a cooling, when one sufIrons from various symptoms related to the arteriosclerosis, such as giddinesses, dazzlings, buzzes in the ears, or headaches, or finally in many psychosomatic disorders.
We know today that the ginseng acts above all on the central nervous system, stimulating and releasing the cortex, and increasing the memory.
This makes it particularly useful to all those who must adapt themselves daily to all kinds of constraining situations, physical or intellectual efforts, brutal emotions, etc.
Secondly, it increases the quantity of red globules, detoxicates the liver, decreases cholesterol, balances the heartbeat and respiratory rates...
It naturally contains many beneficial substances: vitamins B, riboflavin, thiamin, saponins, ginsenosides, essences, sterols...
But all its therapeutic properties are not completely explained. The synergy of some substances, of course, is sometimes evoked, but a little part of the mystery persists, which still allows us to dream some time... of the panacea.
